From Diagnosis to Lifestyle: Empowering Women to Reverse Bone Loss with Dr. Andy Bush

Welcome back to the Stronger Bones Lifestyle Podcast. In Episode 87, host Debi Robinson sits down again with orthopedic surgeon and bone health expert, Dr. Andy Bush, to delve into the intricacies of diagnosing, treating, and managing bone health. From advanced diagnostic tools like REMS and DEXA scans to the often-overlooked importance of lifestyle choices, this episode is packed with insightful information you’ll not want to miss.

Dr. Andy, a bone health maverick, operates a bone center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he empowers patients to take control of their bone health through innovative techniques and personalized care plans. Throughout the discussion, Debi and Dr. Andy tackle issues surrounding false positives in bone density tests, the limitations of standard medical interventions, and the critical need for a more comprehensive, lifestyle-focused approach to bone health.

Join Debi and Dr. Andy as they explore how optimizing your bone health goes beyond simple calcium and vitamin D supplementation. They discuss the importance of digestion, nutrient absorption, and muscle strength in maintaining fracture-resistant bones.

"If the muscle gets strong then the bone will be strong." [9:02]

"The bone doesn’t care what happened yesterday, your bones lives in the moment." [9:53]

"We don’t need gadgets we need to do something in our lives like stand on one foot when you're brushing your teeth." [11:00]

"There are just so many areas we need to go to first to replacing the pill the doctor recommended with the next layer of pills." [15:24]

"If you sit and do nothing you're going to fracture. If you have no muscle you’ll have no bone." [24:42]

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The podcast discusses both REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) and DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scans. The episode tones around the detailed interpretation of these scans and the limitations each has when used independently.
Dr. Bush is skeptical about the actual impact of vibration plates directly on bones. He believes they don’t deliver the right frequency to affect bone healing but acknowledges their benefits for proprioception, balance, and isometric muscle workouts, which can indirectly support bone health.
Dr. Bush advises against the use of strontium supplements. Although strontium may improve DEXA scores because of its density, it doesn’t actually contribute to the structural integrity of bone and may even pose cardiac risks.
Dr. Bush believes it’s possible to halt bone loss and possibly reverse it to some extent, depending on an individual’s genetic set point and how close they are to their maximum bone mass potential. However, he notes that the current statistics and databases don’t effectively track these improvements.
